na Gulyanova, 80, of Woodfin, went home to be with her Lord Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011 at her home. A native of Russia, she was


a daughter of the late Nikolay and Agaphia Kalinin. In ad- dition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her hus- band, Alexander Gulyanov, and sisters, Dunya Kalinina, Anas- tasia Tihomirova, and Zinaida Drozdova. Ms. Gulyanova an- swered her civic duties during World War II and assisted with aide and relief for Allied Forces on the Russian front. She re- ceived her first medal of honor for “outstanding labor” during World War II at the age of 13. As a determined person that never shunned away from work, she received much recognition for her labors and was still very ac- tive well into her 70s. She was also very dedicated to family, and had much joy brought to her heart when she moved two years ago to the United States to be close to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are her daughters,


Lyudmila Buksh and husband Marger of Woodfin, and Gali- na Kuzmina of Russia; sister, Valentina Brusova of Rus- sia; grandchildren, Aleksandr Buksh, Marina O’Brien-Gamble and husband, David, Tatyana Edwards and husband, Pres- ton, Natasha Kuzmina, and Viktoria Mironova, and loving great grandchildren, Vincent and Francesca O’Brien-Gam- ble, Vashti Edwards, and Diana Mironova. Service will be held at noon


on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, at the chapel of Asheville Area Funeral & Cremation Services in Asheville with the family re- ceiving friends two hours prior to the service. Burial will fol- low at Mountain View Memorial Park in Black Mountain. The family wishes to ex-

Mundy Walden, 61, of 7 Blevins Road died Monday, Jan. 10, 2011. Mrs. Walden was born Oct.


20, 1949, in Buncombe County. She retired from Square D after 35 years. She then went back to school at Haywood Com- munity College and received a “Who’s Who” award for gradu- ating top in her class for her horticulture degree. Crafts and flowers were her passion. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Lessie Lunsford Mundy. Surviving are her husband


of 42 years, Danny Walden; sisters, Lois Ponder and Eva Worley of Weaverville; broth- er, Duain Mundy of East Flat Rock; several nieces and neph- ews; special great niece as her granddaughter, Shana Brook- shire who called her Mamaw; and her beloved Shih Tzu, Layla “Bell.” Her funeral service will be

66, died Saturday Jan. 8, 2011 at his home after a four month battle with cancer. A lifelong resident of Bun-


combe County, he was a mem- ber of Cedar Hill Baptist Church in Alexander and had retired from Square D after 40 years of service. He was a son of the late T.H. and Ruby Worley and was also preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Worley and grandson, Matthew Guthrie.

gins, of Higgins Lane, passed away Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 at Mis- sions Hospital Memorial Cam- pus, while surrounded by his loving family. He was born Dec. 2, 1940, to the late B. H. Higgins and Ada Ray Chambers. A na- tive of Yancey County, Howard had lived in Madison County the past 50 years. Howard was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a leading homicide detective with the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office and retired after 12 years as Weaverville Chief of Police. Howard is survived by his
