Daniel Radcliffe SPOTLIGHT
How do you choose the performers that you capture on film? The subjects that I choose to photograph are people that I genuinely admire and that I find interesting. In this One Day in the Life of… work, I’m striving to create images that are at once
both raw and intimate, yet treat the subject with respect and integrity. It is my goal to reveal a beautiful or vulnerable side to the subject that has not
been revealed before. We live in a media-saturated world, where respect and integrity seem to be
undervalued qualities in relation to celebrities. Yet, our society seems to have a limitless appetite for reality programming. I think we can have both closeness and quality, realness and beauty.
What do hope that people who buy the books will come away with after viewing your stun- ning photos - coupled with the celebrities own words - about the stars themselves? I guess that depends on the book subject, and on the viewer. My goal is to pres-
ent a day- long portrait of interesting creative people - so perhaps to expose some of their working process, their thoughts on performance.
What have been some of the more surprising elements that you have learned about the celebrities during your time with them? (I was pleasantly surprised with the Jake Shears in the shower shot) Jake, Rufus and Dan are all friends of mine, so there was nothing surprising. Jake likes to be naked - so that’s no surprise!
Do you spend time with them beforehand, so that it’s a more relaxed shoot? So far all of the book subjects have been people I know well, but I always get
better photos the more I know someone. So perhaps the three subjects so far have “given me” more.
And have there ever been any instances when a subject has said, “No, this image would be off-limits?” Not really. We sometimes take a break, for like an hour and I get a cup of coffee or a bit of fresh air, and they do their thing.
Who would be the penultimate One Day in the Life of celebrity or celebrities that you would like to include in your series? Well, certainly Lady Gaga is the most interesting person working in mainstream
pop today. And I think she’s an important performer - she has become an adjective – so, of
course Gaga – I’m working on that (and) Kylie Minogue, Marc Jacobs, David Bowie, Madonna and Michelle Obama; people of great influence and power. The next confirmed book subject is theater director Robert Wilson, document- ing his new opera to premiere in Manchester in July. (It’s) entitled The Life and Death of Marina Abramović, which includes a great and talented cast (Marina Abramović, Willem Dafoe, and Antony Hegarty).
Tell us what it feels like, on both a professional and personal level, to have your work included in The Guggenheim Museum’s permanent collection, MoMA’s archives, as well as adorning the homes of celebrities, such as Sarah Jessica Parker? It’s great when anyone likes my work; and certainly nice when someone whose
work I admire does. Elton John owns a number of my pieces. I met him at Baby Daddy’s birthday
party a couple years ago; he was great. He told me how much he liked my work, so that was very nice. It’s an honor to have people collect one’s work; so I think I feel lucky.
