for hours, with bad-temper wearing years off my life and that of everyone unlucky enough to pass within earshot. “Darling,” I said to John, “How shall I

fi nd a needle?” “Fabric store,” he said, so promptly,

that that aſt ernoon I visited one. But they had nothing. “An upholsterer,” he said, so I phoned

one or two, but they had none to spare. T en I called Gary Interiors in Duncan, and aſt er I’d spent less than a minute on the phone with Linda Gary, I felt as brimful of delighted happenstance as when I’d stumbled onto the second pile of maroon upholstery fabric. I hung up the phone and turned to John. “Not only will she sell me an eight-

inch upholstery needle,” I told him, “but she’ll special order it and charge me only the $15 it cost her!” John looked impressed. “May her upholstery buttons never

work loose,” I said joyfully. “She’ll phone in a few days when the needle arrives.” “Fiſt een dollars,” John said slowly.

“T e entire van is worth only about two hundred.” “Darling,” I said, “We’re committed.

We’re committed, and we are about to get new seat covers.” I clasped my hands to my bosom in a sudden paroxysm of joy. In my mind’s eye, Homeland Security offi cials waved us through without even making us stop. I could hear their admiring voices as we drove past, “What a great van!” they cried. “What wonderful upholstery!” T e day the needle arrived I had to

substitute teach, so it was John who picked it up from Linda. On his way home, as I’d asked, he bought six sheets of Bristol board. And by the end of that day, we had collected in one place all the ingredients for a life-transformation: maroon upholstery fabric, white sheets I could masking-tape together and cut into a pattern, and a real upholstery needle with a large eye, a wickedly sharp point and a sturdy shaſt eight beautiful inches long. Borders? What borders? T e minute I’ve fi nished my seat

covers, I expect a letter of invitation from the President of the United States himself. 6
