Local organic growers deliver great value
We all need to balance our budgets with, hopefully, the minimum impact on the environment, whilst at the same time providing good quality food for our families.
We are all aware of the large scale vegetable producers, growing for main supermarkets, but do you realise that local organic growers will deliver a great value box of quality local veg to your door every week, a service which has been available since 1997?
Keveral Farm, on the western slopes of the Seaton valley, is home to Sean, Lambrini and Bill, who all produce organic vegetables and soft fruit from sheltered plots and polytunnels nestling within the woodland.
On the other side of the valley at Trerieve Farm, Jim and Marian Candy have been farming organically since 1999, and grow potatoes, leeks and brassicas on a field scale.
Brian at Skyegrove Farm, Herodsfoot, also comes to Keveral every Wednesday, bringing his produce, which he grows with the help of two working horses, Bill and Ben and helps with packing.
These growers also provide produce
to the country’s best restaurants so you receive both quality and interesting produce.
Every box is packed individually, with varying amounts of produce according to the size of box, so all size families and appetites are catered for.
Some customers only have a box every fortnight, others cancel their box in the summer when their garden or allotment provides sufficient, but the box scheme is flexible in accommodating every requirement.
Fruit and gourmet mushrooms are also available, as is a selection of jam and preserves and organic eggs from Penbugle Farm at Duloe.
Some produce has to be brought in, but efforts are being made to maximise the local content of the boxes (although banana growing in Cornwall is proving to be a challenge, even for Sean).
Jim Candy said: ‘I have farmed all my life, mainly with beef and sheep, but the vegetables fit well into the rotation, providing a varied habitat for the wildlife we are encouraging on the farm.

the rotation, and graze the steeper fields. I occasionally help Marian with the boxes, and there is nothing better than delivering vegetables that have been harvested at Trerieve that day and getting feedback on the quality.’
Bill Knight, who also does the admin for the boxes, said: ‘Some people think organic food will be too expensive, but frequently the content of our boxes would cost you more in a supermarket, and you would not be getting organic local produce.
‘I believe organic produce is healthier for the planet, so you are keeping money in the local economy and helping to save the planet.’
