‘Multitude of reasons why application should be refused’

Town councillors in Looe are calling for a public inquiry into proposals to restrict access to a section of the coast path at Plaidy as part of a clifftop development.

Fresh plans have been submitted to Cornwall Council for the erection of a two-metre high wall adjacent to the recently- renovated property known as Dove Rock.

Objectors say the wall would significantly reduce the width of the path running in front of the building, preventing access by emergency vehicles and encroaching on, what many believe to be, unregistered land.

The application by Charles Fowler of the Guild of St James (Investments) Ltd is for a Certificate of Lawfulness for the proposed construction of a two-metre boundary wall and hardstanding at Dove Rock.

Outcry over plans to restrict

coastal path

He has provided evidence to the council from a former owner which, he says, proves that the land forms part of the curtilage of Dove Rock.

The consultation period for the application ended recently after objectors were urged to act promptly by registering their objections

online with the council.

Although the consultation period has ended, town councillors considered the issue as a special item during a meeting in January and are now urging Cornwall Council to defend the historic vehicular access along the affected stretch of the coastal path.

They say any reduction of

public amenity and access here should be seen as a threat to the status and integrity of the whole path, and that high levels of local concern demonstrated evidence of historic public access.

Councillors will also say that, given the broader public interest, Cornwall Council should consider requesting a public inquiry.

Cornwall Councillor Armand Toms held a special meeting with the council’s programmes manager Mike Eastwood on Friday to advise him of the community’s feelings about the development.

‘We don’t want the coast path closed up in any way and there are a multitude of reasons why the application should be refused,’ he said, adding that he had used the path for more than 50 years and there had never been any question of the land being in private ownership or of access being restricted.

Call to join Hugh’s Fish Fight

A Looe restaurant is supporting a campaign launched by celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall to highlight the amount of fish discarded at sea.

Hugh’s Fish Fight campaign was widely publicised during Channel 4’s Big Fish Fight where he met fishermen from around the UK, marine conservationists, politicians, supermarket bosses and members of the public.

The campaign highlights how around half of the fish caught by fishermen in the North Sea are unnecessarily thrown back into the ocean dead. The campaign, which has been widely supported on social networking site Facebook, is encouraging people to diversify their eating habits.

The Old Sail Loft in Looe is supporting the campaign with a new fish menu to highlight the amount of fish wasted. Dominic and Michelle Sadler who run the restaurant said:

‘For one month we will be running a Fish Fight menu, purely because of where we are and what we do as a business. I hope other restaurants will follow our lead as this is a point that most definitely needs to be made and people need to be aware.’

Cornwall councillor for East Looe and St Martins Armand Toms said: ‘This is not just a problem up north, but here in Cornwall.

‘There are more than 400,000 signed up to his Facebook page and I am one of them along with many of the local fisherman and their families.’

All of the fish on the Old Sail Loft menu is sustainable and has low food miles, having been caught by Looe day boats just off the coast.

If fishermen accidentally catch more than their quota of fish they have no choice but to throw them overboard.
