JOSEPH GORDON Special Advisor to the Director, Air Force Research Laboratory


As inaugural chair of the AFRL Propulsion Directorate’s Diversity Task Force, Joseph Gordon led the implemen- tation of a new recruitment and reten- tion strategy. He is also architect of the Directorate’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions Program. He is directly responsible for the award of contracts that provide lead- ing research for aerospace propulsion, turbine engines and rocket propulsion. Mr. Gordon also lends his talents to many Dayton, Ohio causes. Some of his community activities include serving as a K-12 robotics coach, and tutoring more than 300 people over 21 years.

SCOTT FLANDERS, SES Director, Division of Site and Environmental Reviews, NRC


Scott Flanders joined the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 1991. Since then, he has made significant contri- butions to public health and safety. He has led the preparation of the environmental impact statement for the last nuclear pow- er plant that the NRC licensed, and served as a project manager for the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Plant license renewal application. In 2004, Mr. Flanders was selected for the federal Senior Executive Service (SES) position in the Environmental Protection and Performance Assessment Directorate. In his current role, he has led issuance of the first three draft environmental impact statements for new nuclear power plant applications in nearly 20 years.

Karolyn Young started her career as an intern after her freshman year at the University of Michigan. Since then, she’s been a mission planner for 12 Global Positioning System missions, and director for the division responsible for integra- tion of small satellite tech demos and launch systems. More recently, she was selected to co-lead a team responsible for industry-wide mentoring programs and for developing the framework for such a program within Aerospace. She has devel- oped workshops to equip corporate staff with resources to be effective mentors and facilitated mentoring exercises with men- tors and summer interns.

Dr. Carlessia Hussein manages public health programs in 23 Maryland counties and in Baltimore city. In 2004, she launched a health disparities web- site that provides disparities data, ethnic health resources, cultural competency information, and best practices for local community-based groups. She also pub- lished the Maryland Health Disparities Chartbook, and disseminates information to a growing network of minority organi- zations throughout the state. Dr. Hussein established a minority recruitment and retention program that increased minority matriculation to 43 percent in the early 1970s.

BOOKER TYRONE, JR., PH.D. Lead Member of Technical Staff, AT&T


Dr. Tyrone is a success at AT&T and in the community. Between 2004 and 2009, he served as president of the Com- munity NETwork, an employee resource group for African American telecommu- nications professionals of AT&T. While president, Dr. Tyrone and Community NETwork led AT&T’s education effort by spearheading a donation of scholar- ships to deserving high school graduates. In February 2010, he became a member of the board of directors of the Austin Area Urban League, reflecting AT&T’s commitment to the city’s Urban League efforts to elevate the standard of living of underserved residents by focusing on educational improvement, employment readiness, health, and affordable housing.

Walter Pinkston is an outstanding role model and leader. Over his 15-year career at the $17.6 billion retailer, he has been tasked with supporting numerous in- frastructures, assorted networks, disparate telephone systems, and multiple versions of both proprietary and vendor-integrated software applications. In his current role, he ensures uninterrupted technical service support as he leads a diverse team of tech- nicians to perform restoration and service activities for 5,000 desktop and mobile computers at JCPenney home office. In all areas of responsibilities, he has fully met or exceeded expectations year on year and achieved the highest performance scores at JCPenney since 2004.
