New digs: Located in Downtown Los Angeles, one block fromthe Los Angeles Police Department’s new headquarters, this 100,000-square-foot, five-story concrete structure integrates three components that typically stand on their own: an 800-space parking structure for LAPD employees; amechanics’ garage, a carwash, and a refueling station for the LAPD’s top brass; and a culturally oriented retail component alongMain Street.

Street life: In order tominimize its impact on the developing neighborhood, themechanics’ garage is located at the rear of the site, a half level below the street. The bulk of the structure is set back fromthe sidewalk in order to preserve views of the former St. Vibiana’s Cathedral, which until recently was home to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of LA and now serves as a cultural center. The one-story retail component, slated to be an art gallery, sits immediately on the sidewalk in order to enliven and activate life along the street. Its glass-curtain wall is designed to allow the art to have an enlivening presence for passers-by on foot or in cars.

Meshing nicely: Holding all these elements together is an undulating, vertically banded, stainless steelmesh screen that stretches across the full width of the 300-foot-long structure. Painted in a pattern of leaf-like forms with two tones of green, it creates a dynamic, joyful image that represents the “greening” of Los Angeles. The screen, from W.S. Tyler, also provides a high level of security for LAPD employees in amanner designed to allow the structure to be naturally ventilated. Formore information, go to www.weavingideas.net.
