An environmental nematicide for protecting grass
being developed by AFBI, that are showing some sign of helping to reduce the problem. It is important to concentrate on spraying these compounds to coincide with the major hatching periods of juveniles in spring, summer and autumn, as it has shown to be difficult to catch the egg masses within the root structures themselves.” “For the last two years, we have been able to control the situation by managing and limiting the damage from nematodes by a programme of sampling to identify life cycle stages and spraying at hatching stages. We have also looked at our cutting regimes in an attempt to reduce stress
on the turf, which makes it move vulnerable to nematode attack.”
“During our short
maintenance period, in the early summer months, we also have been removing the top 10-15 millimetres of soil, which helps to get rid of the additional problem of meadow grass and algae that start to invade thinning turf areas as a result of nematode root damage. This has helped to maintain playability and has been a better commercial option than replacing the entire pitch surface every year, which is an extremely costly and also lengthy process.”

ECOspray is very pleased to announce that Eagle Green CareTM has been granted UK approval as a horticultural liquid nematicide for amenity and sports turf (MAPP No 14989)
• This is the first approval ever for a liquid nematicide on turf to be granted and heralds the way for ECOspray to register other nematicides from its stable of products.
•Granule and liquid formulations form the basis for a portfolio of products specifically designed as nematicides.
•In particular, ECOspray secured Annex l approval in August 2009 and now has a number of Annex lll products in a registration pipeline in the UK, Europe and further afield.

Stunt Nematode
determining whether or not treatment is necessary and, if so, when to apply a suitable product. Damage threshold population levels (often used as a trigger point for applying a nematicide) vary depending on the nematode species present. For example, the usual damage threshold for stunt nematodes (Tylencorhynchus) is 300 worms per 100ml soil, while 20 needle nematodes (Longidorus) in the same volume of soil can cause serious root damage. Other environmental stresses can modify these population thresholds, with factors such as low light levels, water stress or disease reducing the size of
Galls on roots
the nematode population required to cause serious turf damage. It is now clear that reducing turf stress (e.g. by applying suitable
biostimulants) can be as important as reducing nematode levels when managing plant parasitic nematode infestations. The wide range of
nematode types found in turfgrass means that delivering effective control of plant parasitic nematodes can be a demanding task for the groundsman. However, a better understanding of the biology of these pests will lead to improved methods for reducing nematode levels and minimising their impact on turfgrass.
The Deep Drill 60/18 and Drill n Fill aerators bring dramatic improvements to turfgrass quality, with unrivalled performance:
 Drill, extract and backfill all in one action!
 Improve infiltration, percolation and gas exchange up to 18" deep.
 Bypass wet, spongy upper areas into freer drain- ing, more structured soil beneath greens, tees and fairways.
