“Greenkeeping is all about the soil, get that right and the plant will take care of itself”

possible, paired against each other in relation to
construction and location, e.g. the 9th and putting green are both sand based, inherently dry and only thirty metres apart. Thus Symbio had one of them and ALS - YARA had the other.
Once this was done, we
agreed that we would need to take initial readings of the greens. Over the course of winter 2009/10, the greens were bottomed out. They had nothing, absolutely nothing at all from November 2009 until the end of April 2010, just over five months, right through the worst winter for thirty years. Interestingly, the one thing that can be drawn from this is, whilst the poa looked rough, and I mean dog rough, the agrostis and festuca were plodding along perfectly happily without an apparent care in the world. At
this point, you might question my earlier statement that the course is no different to a private run establishment, but do not imagine that the members were happy about this.
Criticism had to be taken on the chin but, right from the get go, the golf committee had been fully informed of the intention, the reason for doing so and the intended long term benefit. As most clubs are not running these types of trial, they would not need to go through this process process should they wish to change their regimes. Once the greens were bottomed out, we had a datum point from which to take readings. Happily, with the Symbio range geared for biological analysis and the YARA range geared for chemical analysis, each company analysed samples of each other’s greens. The
