she allegedly stole $278 worth of clothing and jewelry on Fri- day (Dec. 3) from Belk in the Asheville Mall. She is alleged to have tried to return some of the items for cash the following day when she was arrested. Cooley, 39, of Clarks Cha-

tant principal with the schools since 2003, said Jan Blunt with Buncombe County Schools. Be- fore joining Buncombe County Schools, she was an English teacher. At the fifth- and sixth-grade
school in Weaverville, one of Cooley’s primary responsibili- ties is managing the buses. Blunt said Cooley’s status
with the schools would be eval- uated once her case is resolved, but she will remain suspended with pay until her case has been settled. She added the suspen- sion was the schools’ standard procedure. Cooley was released on a writ- ten promise to appear in court.
