STARGAZERS Meteor Showers A


sk beginning stargazers about meteor showers, and most will cite the Perseid


shower in mid-August as the most spectacular of the year. But is it really the best, or is their answer the result of some other factors or conditioning? My suspicion is the latter and here’s why. During the Perseid shower, we


can often expect to see 50 or 60 meteors, or shooting stars, per hour -- not an unrespectable amount in anyone’s book. But during the meteor shower known as the Geminids, numbers closer to 100 per hour are often recorded. Why is it, then, that people


don’t cite this as their favorite? Because it occurs during the winter t ime when people are generally unwilling to brave the cold temperatures to watch lights falling from the sky. As a result, the Geminids don’t g e t muc h favorable press! Too bad, because


I’ve always felt that the Geminids are easily the best shower of the year. First off, these meteors seem to radiate from a point in the constellation Gemini, the twins, which, during early e v e n i n g h o u r s , appears low in the ea s t-nor thea s tern sky. Tis means that sky watchers who

don’t wish to stay up all night can at least get a glimpse of some meteor activity before retiring for the night. Around the midnight hour, Gemini lies nearly straight overhead and showers the sky with meteors falling from it in all directions. In addition, the Geminids often


produce brilliant “fireballs” that can explode, light up the sky and cast a shadow, or sometimes leave a smoky trail behind. You can use binoculars to watch the remains of these trails as they twist and turn for several minutes in upper atmospheric air currents. Tis year, the Geminids reach their peak around 6 a.m. EST on


Tuesday, Dec. 14, when the Earth plows head on into the swarm of meteoric particles left behind by the asteroid 3200 Phaethon, but great views will come from late night Dec. 13 through dawn Dec. 14. Even though there will likely


be cold temperatures where you live, you won’t have to deal with moonlight this year since our nearest celestial neighbor sets long before the show reaches its best. My r e commendat ions for


watching this great sky show are to dress warmly, take yourself far away from bright city lights, lie back on a sleeping bag or lawn chair and keep your eyes open!
