Get into: Walking
A
WALKING group in Oban has been en-
couraging people to put their best foot forward by taking a more scenic look around the town. Paths for Health Oban organises weekly walks around the town and the surrounding area, in order to get people more active. January 21 marks the first anniversary of the group that has improved the lives of a number of people by offering moderate weekly exercise. A high proportion of group members have had an ill- ness of condition that pre- vented them from doing physical activity making them feel like they should
stay indoors. One of the group organisers, Sheila Quillan from Kilmore, said: ‘Between 15 and 25 of us meet at 10am every Thursday at the Congrega- tional Church. We’ll go on a walk for 40 - 45 minutes and then come back to the church for a cup of tea and a blether. ‘There are always four or five walk leaders, who can help people along and as people get fitter they, too, become walk leaders. ‘Not only can it get you healthier and fitter, it is a great chance to get out and meet new people. We
are encouraging people to have the confidence to come out and walk – it’s also a social thing.’ Sheila added: ‘You can see people who are in rehabilita- tion following a stroke or a bypass gaining confidence as they walk.’ The group has devised a dozen routes around the town to pick from and as the group gets new walk leaders, they gain new sug- gestions for future routes.
