Living Simply, the theme for this month’s issue, is something many of us strive for. Perhaps it is a reaction to the complexities of modern life, or perhaps a nostalgic wish to return to a less dif- fi cult era; but the urge to reduce, retrench, and return is real and powerful.

To me, “living simply” involves the practice of noticing and cultivating joyful moments in my life. The smell of lavender, eating in the car, going for a “forbidden” yogurt with chocolate

chips. Moments of connection with the other beings in my house, as when the cats crowd around me during my morning meditation; when Silvester, my mother’s old cat, reminds me with a paw on my arm to pet him; when I catch the cats napping in a funny embrace, as if they were star-struck lovers unable to pull themselves away from each other; when I watch them hang out on a shelf or across the back of my chair as I work. And those moments in nature, when I take my sunset walk, holding my breath in anticipation of my favorite row of cypress trees planted in a perfect line, that funny looking short palm with the orange blossoms, the beautiful colors blanketing the sky, clouds in funny shapes, the sight of the mountains.

In a nutshell, living simply for me is embracing all of life — the joyful mo- ments and those less joyful, such as the tension in my stomach as I write this letter — knowing in my deepest being that we are all bathed in goodness all the time, whether we realize it or not.
