during an enemy raid. One patient was killed beside this Nurse, and another was wounded by the same bomb.”

If being bombed wasn’t enough after 21 months in Salonika, Daisy then returned home to England at the beginning of August 1918. While crossing the English Channel with 700 wounded soldiers the Ambulance Transport ship 'Warilda’ was torpedoed by UC-49, a German submarine, with the loss of around 120 lives.

Daisy survived after an horrific experience in the water and, at the request of Miss Sidney Browne, the Matron-in- Chief of the Territorial Force Nursing Service, wrote an account of her experience. The correspondence can be found under Nurses’ Tales on the Scarlet Finders website (www.scarletfinders.co.uk).

George and Daisy brought up four sons and a daughter in Purneys Road and the photograph of Daisy in uniform was sent to her second son, my father, while he was overseas with the RAF during World War II.

Following the death of George, Daisy moved from Purneys Road to Beanshaw on the Coldharbour estate in New Eltham. Her wartime experiences had taken their toll and she needed to be close to her two eldest sons and their families in William Barefoot Drive.

The last

years of her life were spent in James Newman Court at the ‘top’ of William Barefoot Drive. She died in 1972 and was buried with George at

Only 135 Military Medals were awarded to women during the Great War and it would be unusual to have a woman so decorated in the community. It is always dangerous to claim uniqueness but I suspect that Eltham is unique in having in their midst a married couple both of whom were awarded the Military Medal.

Although too young for my grandfather to be anything other than a hazily remembered figure, I do have fond memories of my grandmother especially after she moved to Coldharbour Estate where we were living.

A deeply Christian and kindly lady she maintained that fierce sense of duty that sustained her while a nurse throughout her life. In later years as her breathing deteriorated, possibly because of her WWI experiences, I would carry coal up to her first floor flat where she would be sitting looking out over the shops on the Mound and on Thursdays I’d often pop in on my way to the scouts meeting in St Alban’s church.

In the summer of 1972 I remember her sitting in the sun in the back garden of my uncle’s house in William Barefoot Drive with two of her sons and their children, some married by now, sitting around her. A few months later I was driving back to Eltham from Bristol, where I was working, to her funeral.

Sexual Health

Meera Sharma Pharmacist

It is important to look after one’s sexual health as unprotected sex can lead to Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) or Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), which, if left undetected or untreated can lead to serious health consequences such as infertility. Unprotected sex can also lead to pregnancy.

Apart from condoms, the other methods of contraception do not protect against STDs or STIs.

STD and STI cases are on the increase and so it is important to be aware of these and take a pro-active approach to maintaining a healthy attitude to sex. Commonly known STDs are genital warts, herpes, gonorrhoea and chlamydia. Noticeable symptoms may be a discharge from the vagina or penis, pain when passing urine, lower abdominal or testicular pain and a change in monthly period bleeds. Chlamydia, however, can have no noticeable symptoms. The only certain way to be diagnosed for chlamydia is to be tested.
