The railway has had a bumper summer with children and families enjoying their rides on the 400 metre long narrow gauge track, which is open on alternate Sundays in the warmer months. The track passes along an electrically signalled track with footbridges, level crossing, mini-viaduct, signal box and tunnel.

The railway, run by volunteers of the Welling and District Model Engineering Society, has been threatened with closure because of the planned re-development of its site behind the National Grid installation in Rochester Way.

To celebrate, the society has organised its annual Santa Special on Sunday December 19.


Secretary Robert Underwood said: “We will have at least one more year and possibly two because the development plans seem to be delayed. Running the railway is a hobby for the volunteers but it’s one we’re happy to share with others on our open days.”


National Grid’s proposed development is linked to their proposals to bore a high voltage electricity cable beneath SE9 to deliver more power to central London. This would mean the model railway might need to re-locate.
