Byerly brings ‘elementary eyes’ to North Windy Ridge
By Marilyn Payne North Windy Ridge Intermediate
School students and parents will see a new face Tuesday (Aug. 17) when school starts back for the fall. Prin- cipal Jackie Byerly begins her first year as principal of the school after having been asked to fill the posi- tion by Buncombe County Schools Superintendent Tony Baldwin. “Dr. Baldwin came to Candler
and told me that he wanted to talk to me,” Byerly said. “I had no idea un- til that day that I’d be leaving Can- dler but he asked me to fill (Debbie) McDermott’s role and ‘give (North Windy Ridge) school elementary eyes.’ It was very difficult to leave Candler but I told Dr. Baldwin that if that was where he needed me that I would happily go.” Te 2010-2011 school year will
be Byerly’s 33rd year with Bun- combe County Schools. She began teaching first through fifth grade in 1978, which she continued un- til 1996 when she decided that she wanted to fill an administrative po- sition. Byerly harped on her passion
for developing and furthering cur- riculum for three years as the dis-
trict’s instructional coordinator and director of elementary education before she left to go to Candler be- cause she missed working directly with the children. Although she has only ever worked at elementary schools, Byerly does have experience working with sixth graders. During a stint at Haw Creek Elementary School, the school was a kindergar- ten through sixth grade school, and Byerly is comfortable and excited with her new environment at North Windy Ridge. “I love education. I love schools.
I love children. I love teachers and I love working with them. And I love the atmosphere of it all,” she said. “I’ve always been motivated and challenged by schools and the school system. Tere is absolutely nothing that I feel apprehensive or concerned about in any school situ- ation. I feel that public education is part of what makes our country great and I wouldn’t change my profession for the world. I started out as a teacher and I still view my- self as a teacher.” One of the things that Byerly
plans to tweak at North Windy Ridge is the way the sixth grade operates. Te school will now use a two-teacher team instead of the pre-

vious three-teacher system in order to give teachers more teaching time and allow teachers closer connec- tion to their students. Te idea is to keep a setup that is different from the elementary school setting while still bringing “elementary eyes” to the school in an academic focus. “I feel that the sixth-grade stu-
dents being able to remain in the elementary setting and the fifth graders being moved out of the completely younger setting allows them both to mature and grow as learners before moving them on to a bigger school, a larger population environment,” Byerly said. “With the intermediate schools, I think we can keep children for one more year.” North Windy Ridge is currently
a model for BCS. Tere are plans to open three more intermediate schools in the system, one in both the Roberson and Erwin districts for the 2011-2012 school year and one in the Enka district in 2012. Byerly is enthused to work with
all of the NWR staff, including two new teachers. “I very much look forward to
working with the staff, everyone’s already been willing to work with me very well,” she said. “North Windy Ridge has a very dedicated and talented staff. I believe that the parents are also very active and sup- portive and truly want a good edu- cation for their children. It thrills me to work in a community where people are involved and care about the school.”
