North Buncombe Local to celebrate 90th birthday Lula Hensley Roland will be celebrating her 90th


birthday at 4 pm on Saturday (Aug. 14) at the Fire- place Restaurant on Weaverville Road in Woodfin. All friends and family are welcome to attend. Lula spent much of her early childhood around the


Grove Park area. Her father Joseph worked for Grove Park Inn. Her family later moved to Baird Cove where she lived most of her life. As the oldest of six children, she helped with the family, often times cooking, bak- ing and helping her mother Mamie. At the age of 21 she married James Carson (JC)


Roland of Asheville. Tey started a family and spent some time living in Michigan and Georgia before re- turning home to raise their four children, Bill, Brenda Joyce, Bob and Beverly. She worked at the Hadley Sweater Company in Weaverville, before going to Square D Company in 1961 where she remained until she retired in December 1982. After losing her husband in 1989, she filled her


time with babysitting and spending time with her family. She has been a geriatric caregiver for many


special people for the past 15 years now and continues to do so part- time. Some of the things that she enjoys are reading the Bible, visiting the sick and shut-in and lending a helping hand. She also enjoys making banana pudding and sharing it with others. She and three of her sisters (Mary, Peggy and Kathleen)


often spend time together, visiting and, at times, freezing and canning fruits and vegetables. She also works in the yard and loves flowers. She has nine grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
