the team and its faithful. Te BlackHawks managed two

wins, but one of those was the result of a forfeit from McDowell. With physical, veteran leadership

and fresh blood at key positions, Metts said this year’s team is poised to re- bound from the doldrums of 2009. “Our strength is up front,” he said.

“My hope is we establish a tremendous running game, which will open up other options for us offensively.” On the offensive line, Brady Douthit

and Ryan Shiver will establish a beefy presence. Earlier this summer, Shiver won the “Strongest Man” competition during June’s National Underclassmen Ultimate 100 football combine in At- lanta. Junior Christian Jewkes will take the

starting to appear in WNC as they do every spring. Besides being bothersome by attach- ing to us and to our pet’s skin and feeding on blood, they also represent a real and potential- ly life-threatening health risk. Ticks can infect people and pets with several different serious diseases. The most common of these diseases in our region is Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF). RMSF causes a fever, lethargy, pain and many other possible symptoms. RMSF is potentially fatal but is quite treatable if caught early and is preventable through avoiding tick bites. The best way to protect your dog or cat from ticks and diseases they carry is to decrease their chances of being bit by using products such as Frontline. Be aware that there are many products out there that claim to offer tick protection but are not particularly effective and may not be safe, especially for cats. Ask your veterinarian for advice on the right protection for your pet.

It’s that time of year again. Ticks are just

reins under center. He led last year’s ju- nior varsity squad to a winning record and passed for more than 1,000 yards. “He’s a good leader,” Metts said. Metts said the team has also added

a few wrinkles offensively this year and plans to utilize Collin Lilly in the tight end position. Good things are expected out of

starting tailback Devin Calloway, although he and several other team- mates, including fullback Dallas Rice, will sit out the first few games of the season for disciplinary reasons. Other returnees such as Brent Ray-

field and Colby Fox will also provide key leadership. In all, 18 starters from last year’s team returns. A three-game homestand in the

coming weeks against Madison, one of the BlackHawks’ two wins last year, Pisgah and Brevard, who nar- rowly clipped the BlackHawks 14-7 in last year’s matchup, could help North Buncombe gel and prepare the team for a rigorous Mountain Athletic Con- ference slate. Te BlackHawks end the season against Asheville, featuring Florida commit Jeoffrey Pagan, and Reynolds, last year’s NCHSAA 4-A champions. Metts knows the schedule will be

challenging, but believes there is a lot of room to maneuver in the conference standings after the Rockets. “It could be a toss-up for the rest of

us,” he said.
