tor of ACUMC since 2003 and is the church’s first assigned female pastor. She was the Christian Education director at Christ United Methodist Church for the four years prior. Originally from Virginia, Kiess and her hus- band, Ray, have the unique op- portunity of both being pastors. Ray is the pastor of Clarks Cha- pel United Methodist Church. The two congregat ions join together for worship on several occasions each year. “We both love our churches and teaching God’s word,” Kiess said. “We consider ourselves very blessed to be where we are.” Kiess has found great en-

sanctuary pews or walking out- side through its gated cemetery, history is everywhere you look. Alexander Chapel United Meth- odist Church is another of the North Buncombe churches rich in years of Christian heritage. ACUMC was first established in January of 1856.


Its origi-


nal two-acre tract of land was located on Aiken Road and is a part of its current-day property. The congregation’s first house of worship was a log structure used for nearly 34 years. It also served as a community schoolhouse
