By Catherine Hunter Members of the first graduating
class from Erwin High School gath- ered for their 54th reunion July 24. Student Body and Class President Henry Rutledge said they had a re-
spectable turnout with most of the class members present. Te Erwin High School Class of
1956 attended school in what is now Erwin Middle School the first year it was built. “Our class planted the bushes

and did the landscaping around the building,” Rutledge said. “It [the school] was brand new and there was nothing there. We practiced football in a corn field with the stalks stick- ing up.” Rutledge said they have had a re-
union every year since the class grad- uated, so now rather than having a formal gathering, they usually simply meet for a meal. Tis year the group gathered at the Fireplace Restau- rant in Woodfin. Tey shared each other’s news, signed a guest book, looked through old annuals and read newspaper clippings from earlier re- unions. Former class treasurer and Leices-

ball teams in the county,” Fore said. “Te people in Woodfin didn’t
want to come across the river,” re- membered classmate Colleen Red- mond Gurley. “And West Buncombe and Emma weren’t sure they wanted the people from Woodfin on their side of the river.” Crossing the river turned out
good for Gurley, who was from West Buncombe and met her future hus- band, the late Dr. William Gurley of Woodfin, in school. Gurley said though she’s not been able to at- tend all the reunions, but when she is able, she enjoys catching up with old friends and talking about families and grandchildren. “I believe we [Erwin Class of 1956]
made a good contribution to the world,” Gurley said. In spite of the early rivalry, the class
became close, said classmate Rich- ard Sluder. He said approximately one third of the class members have passed away, but it was good to see those who came to the reunion. “It’s amazing how some people
haven’t changed a bit and others have changed a lot,” Sluder said.
