Hunter notes that Camp’s EMS team uses cutting‐edge technologies to help its patients recover as fully as possible from their emergencies. One of these technologies, which Camp was instru‐ mental in setting up, was the use of a Induced Cooling by EMS (I.C.E) proto‐ col. Camp had noted that post‐resusci‐ tation encephalopathy was the single largest contributor to post‐resuscita‐ tion deaths and poor neurological out‐ comes. As part of an effort to reduce the disparity between EMS resuscita‐ tion rates and hospital discharge rates, Camp began looking at the use of induced hypothermia on post‐resusci‐ tation return of spontaneous circula‐ tion (ROSC) patients. After finding lim‐ ited side effects, she developed a com‐ prehensive protocol for EMS to use induced hypothermia as part of a multi‐ faceted approach to optimize neuro‐ logic resuscitation on the ROSC
