Faith & Globalisation Programme Durham University
MA in Faith and Globalisation Introduction
The one-year taught Masters in Faith and Globalisation is intended to provide rigorous, research-driven, interdisciplinary education and training that address the interrelationship of faith/religion and globalisation.
The latter will be treated as both areas of study and domains of social practice. The programme is committed to providing a supportive learning environment that combines critical and practical reasoning. It will address both descriptive and normative dimensions of social action whether from the perspective of the social sciences or the humanities.
Course Modules
The MA is structured in two tiers of modules: compulsory or core modules (120 credits) and optional ones (60 credits).
The core modules include:
• a substantive, broad treatment of "Religion and Globalisation", which sets the agenda for the exploration of the theme, by highlighting theories, themes, and stimulating students to apply them to a concrete current case/debate of their choice;
• a methodological set of modules, which students can choose from, based on their personal strengths or interest, their disciplinary background, or the nature of their dissertation topic;
• a dissertation.
The optional modules tier* seeks to enable students to deepen or broaden their knowledge and skills by exploring different issues and levels of analysis implicated in the relationship between faith/religion and globalisation.
This tier is divided into two groups. The first one consists of modules which broadly address religion and global/international issues. The second group is made up of modules which deal with specific faith/religious traditions or themes of global/international relevance.
• Compulsory - 120 credits • Optional - 60 credits
Students are required to choose at least one module from the first group and at least one relating directly to faith/religion from either group, in order to make sure both dimensions of religion and globalisation are comprehensively and adequately integrated in their choice of modules. Students will be offered careful guidance in this procedure.
*Modules are offered subject to availability from existing modules across the University.
The interconnections of faith, spirituality and organised religion and global issues, contexts and dynamics are explored both in terms of scholarship and practical orientations.
