Faith & Globalisation Programme Durham University

The Faith and Globalisation Programme and its Host Departments

The School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University is delighted to act in partnership with the Department of Theology and Religion as joint hosts of the Faith and Globalisation programme.

The programme, with its research and postgraduate teaching provision aspects, fits in particularly well with the concerns and priorities of the School. It has a strong research orientation in International Relations, especially in the area of ethics. The School’s strengths in issues of justice and morality in regard to inter-state relations complement well the Faith and Globalisation programme. In addition, the School has a long- standing strength in Middle East politics, including political Islam, Islamic finance and Islamic thought. Again, the supporting interconnections with the Faith and Globalisation programme are very evident. The School sees the programme as being at the cutting edge of its commitment to innovation and excellence in postgraduate teaching and in research. The School is fully committed to the successful development of the Faith and Globalisation programme.

(John Dumbrell, Head of School)

The Faith and Globalisation programme is an outstanding example of the interdisciplinary and interdepartmental approach to research and teaching to which the Department of Theology and Religion is committed. In the most recent government research review the Department was ranked the top research department in the UK in the area of theology and religious studies, and it seeks to bring this tradition of excellence to all its research and teaching. It has long-standing strengths in Biblical studies and in historical, systematic and philosophical theology, while in more recent times it has also developed expertise in Jewish studies, Christian social ethics, and in the sociological and anthropological study of religion. The Faith and Globalisation programme reflects this broad range of disciplinary approaches, with its emphasis both on the role of religion in a globalising world and on the contribution of theology to questions of the common good. The Department is delighted to be collaborating with the School of Government and International Affairs in the exploration of issues which are vital to the future wellbeing of the world.
