SHOW-STOPPING SHAFTESBURY
THE Dawlish Repertory Company own and run the Shaftesbury Theatre in Brunswick Place, Dawlish, entirely independently, with volunteers undertaking all the main day-to-day running and maintenance of the premises - the only regular payments being made to contract cleaners.
The company purchased the building in 1959 for the then daunting figure of £2,500, most of which had to be raised fairly quickly by donations from local businesses and interest free loans from member and local supporters. A further £1,000 was needed for renovations and alterations to change the Shaftesbury Hall into the Shaftesbury Theatre. Since those early days the company has continued to improve facilities in the theatre and, in recent years, has spent in excess of £200,000 on major improvements to the auditorium and foyer, with a new reception area and modern toilet facilities. This has resulted in full disabled access and a theatre which offers extremely comfortable surroundings for patrons. The company puts on five plays in a 12-month
