one of the bowls to fund it. They feel the education of setting goals in a project, and then creating the means to make it happen are all valuable life lessons for this intriguing young man. While Karl enjoys the creativity enabled by working
with wood, he also likes that the wood working me- dium comes to his workshop, rather than his other creative pursuit, photography, where he has to voy- age out to the subjects. He prefers black and white photography due to its intrinsically artistic quality, and utilizes traditional film, which he develops and prints himself. He prefers to keep control over the entire creative process – including print focus and exposure settings.

Success at Spruce Meadows
Just last month he emerged victorious in the $75,000 FEI-rated 1.50 meter TD Cup competing in the International Ring at Spruce Meadows against top riders from all over the world. Karl ap- proached it as yet another problem to solve. Starting 23rd out of 26 in a Speed Class is a definite advantage, however having Rodrigo Pessoa, Les- lie Howard and Kent Farrington fol- lowing you is not. Karl’s victory was achieved in the premier area during the ‘North American’ show, on argu- ably the top show day of the summer series, and before a packed house. He reflected that it was quite an ex- hilarating experience to compete be- fore such a large group of knowledge- able and appreciative spectators, but not one to rest on his laurels; he looks forward to future challenges – among which are the U.S. Equestrian Team Olympic Trials.
there a multitude of types of spurs to choose from, but once a rider has selected the appropriate one, the question of their effectiveness often depends on them maintaining a consistent position on the rider’s boot. Riders use one, or a combination of methods, to maintain proper spur position – including the often disappearing spur rest that typically detaches itself from the rider’s boots during a horse show round. Or possibly riders tightening the spur straps until they cut off circulation in the foot. Karl tried every spur that was commercially available and suffered the same issues as everyone else. Instead of complaining, or waiting for someone to devise an
alternative, he decided that it was a problem needing a solu- tion; therefore he used his own imagination and resources to create one. The “Karl spur” is a study of physics and leverage, and it definitely stays in place every time. There is currently a provisional patent for the innovative spurs he created; and he is in the process of obtaining the full patent.
Making a Difference Normally, finding out details about a person’s favorite holi-
days do not provide an insight into their character, however in Karl’s case it does. He prefers adventurous, interactive and contributory holidays rather than typical sightseeing, partying or beach-oriented breaks. Spending a week in Guatemala living in primitive conditions
