state owned facility began struggling due to rising costs, the Hanson's stepped in. “We created another business where we
were contracted to clean the stalls and feed the horses here, and took over all the expense and labor—the hay, shavings, everything. What they had fifteen guys doing, we had four, and we saved them a ton of money,” Hanson says. When the equestrian center was privatized
by the State of California, the Hanson's had to make a bid. “We risked losing it all if we didn't. It turned out we were the successful bidders, and sometimes I wonder about the wisdom of that,” Hanson laughs. Currently the future of the equestrian facil-
ity in a sort of limbo pending the sale of the entire fairgrounds to a developer, Hanson can only continue managing the center as he al- ways has, ensuring that everything—from feed to footing—is up to his standards. “An average day here is basically keeping track
of what’s on the shelves in the office, keep- ing track of all of the guys and what needs to be done, making sure all of the stalls are clean, all the horses are fed and making sure
