RENT While the three-night engagement of Rent, being staged at The Hollywood Bowl, does not constitute five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes (because that’s a year or a “Season of Love,” in Rent song), it does mark Neil Patrick Harris’ inaugural musical theatre directorial debut. The actor, who played the part of Mark in 1997 at The Ahmanson Theatre and national tour, has cast High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens as junkie Mimi, Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger as Maureen and Wayne Brady as Tom. The musical, which is based on La Vie Bohème, enjoyed a 12-year run on Broadway and snagged the Tony Award as Best Musical, as well as a Pulitzer Prize during its original run. Now- August 8 Thurgood Laurence Fishburne stars in the one-man show Thurgood, which is culled from the life of Thurgood Marshall, who was the first African American to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court. The play follows Marshall waxing philosophical to his alma mater, the Howard University School of Law, as he recounts how he went from being a young man from the back streets of Baltimore to a man who changed the course of American history, with his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement as an NAACP lawyer. August 12 – August 15 Menopause The women who people Menopause - The Musical, being performed at The Fred Kavli Theatre in Thousand Oaks, are going through that not-so-magical “change of life.” The plot revolves around four different women facing that unavoidable fact of life, and are embodied by “The Housewife,” “The Professional Woman,” The Soap Star” and “The Earth Mother,” who all happen to meet one day at a lingerie store. Their individual and separate stories about how they are deal- ing with menopause are told through 25 songs. The Fred Kavli Theatre is located at 2100 E. August 21 ANGEL AWARDS SUMMER GALA


Paramount Pictures will be the honoree at this year’s Proj- ect Angel Food’s Annual Angel Awards Summer Gala. The evening’s festivities will kick off a 6:00 p.m. with a silent auction, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. August 21 & August 22 THE 30TH ANNUAL SUNSET


JUNCTION STREET FAIR The 30th Annual Sunset Junction Street Fair is back to entertain the masses with its blend of games, rides, art, tons of food and performers scheduled to keep the event lively, with its theme of “Touch My Life With Love.” This year’s lineup includes blasts from the past with The Ohio Players and Evelyn Champagne King, while Fishbone and Big Daddy Kane showcase the present-day diversity that has made this festival a Los Angeles institution for three decades. August 8 Peace & Justice Speakers Series The Church of the Foothills, which is located at 19211 Dodge Avenue in Santa Ana, will be welcoming special guest speaker, James McElroy, as part of their ongoing “Peace & Justice Speakers Series”. The San Diego-based attorney, has testified in front of legislative committees regarding the passage of hate crimes statutes. McElroy has been awarded with the San Diego County Bar Association’s Service to the Legal Profession Award and Outstanding Attorney of the Year. August 21 Simply divine! The L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center proudly presents “a summer soiree for the senses” with its annual Simply divine! event, which is being held at the highly recognizable Two Rodeo address in Beverly Hills. Not only will Simply divine! feature wine tasting from some of California’s most well-known wineries and fine dining provided by a host of L.A.’s hottest eateries, there will also be travel packages, fine dining and wines being auctioned off during the proceedings. August 27 & August 28 John Williams and the Music of the Movies Film composer John Williams’s career has now spanned 50 years of making memorable movie music, and the maestro will be on hand for a two-night Hollywood Bowl performance of “John Williams and the Music of the Movies”. The Kennedy Center honoree will conduct such familiar film themes as the one that shot him into the pop culture collec- tive conscious, with his instrumental take on the killer shark in Jaws. August 28 The Trans/Giving Film Festival The Trans/Giving Film Festival will kick off its celluloid celebration at The L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center’s Renberg Theater. The film festival will feature the works of transgen- der, genderqueer and intersex actors, producers, writers and directors. The films range from short features and full-length efforts from a host of talent, which tackle a number of sub- jects that are near and dear to the T in the GLBT community acronym, and are dealt with heart, humor and honesty.
