LIFE COULD BE A DREAM The Crooning Crabcakes is a

fictional boy band brought to life by a reference made in the previously successful musi- cal, The Wonderettes. This new work reminisces about the struggle to make it as a singer in an era long before the American Idol phenomenon. Denny and his friend, Eugene want to take one more stab at a chance for fame and fortune.

They decide to form a singing group in order to win a local radio contest on “Big Whopper” Radio. They collaborate with a couple of buddies and aspire to become the best quartet since, well, you know who! Naturally, trouble brews when Eugene’s ex, Lois arrives to help put some polish on the group. However, she had broken Eugene’s heart many years before, so he falls apart while the other three fall in love. An engaging evening which includes many Rock and Roll chart-topping tunes such as “The Great Pretender,” “Unchained Melody,” “Earth Angel” and “Sh-Boom.” Runs through August 29, 2010 at The Laguna Beach Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach. Tickets: 949.497.2787 or lagunaplayhouse.com

[TITLE OF SHOW] There is nothing conventional

IN THE HEIGHTS In The Heights is a musical about a vibrant community located on an

intersection in upper Manhattan’s Washington Heights. The interwoven busi- nesses include a car rental company, beauty parlor and convenience store. All are mom-and-pop businesses, but because of the bad economy they are struggling to stay afloat and provide for their families. Usnavi (played by Tony Award-winning creator Lin-Manuel Miranda) has built a relationship over time with Claudia who has become just like an Abuela (Grandmother) to him. When her health takes a turn for the worse, she bestows her hidden lottery winnings to him; knowing that he will spend the money wisely. He decides to close down his store and move to the coast in the Dominican Republic. While saying his farewells, he is conflicted with the choice to retire, move and live a carefree life or stay with his chosen family and save the old neighborhood. Runs August 3 through 15 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, 600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. Tickets: 714.556.2787 or ocpac.org.
