INDULGENCES spinology by jared cox

The Rage Monthly: First things first, just a few months ago you had a normal day job and now you are DJ’ing all over the place. Can you describe how it all feels? DJ Ahmed: It is bizarre. It’s something I have wanted to do for a very long time, and

now that it’s finally happening I don’t think it has really sunk in. When I was employed I was waking up at 6:00 a.m. to work, DJ’ing once or twice a week after working until 5:00 p.m., and then it would start all over again the next day.

Rage: Where did you grow up? Ahmed: I grew up in Orange County and have lived here all my life. When I was a

teenager, my father’s work relocated him to Dubai where my parents spent their early years. I love visiting and spending time in Dubai.

Rage: How did you first become a DJ? Ahmed: I bought my first DJ toy equipment when I was around 16. It was a USB device

that connected to my computer and played sampled beats with the push of a button. I was intrigued to experience more, so I saved up and bought a pair of Denon CD play- ers and vinyl technics. My first few gigs were for the CSUF fraternities where I went to school. Even though I was not part of a fraternity, I regularly got gigs through word of mouth. I then branched off to retail corporate parties that kept me consistently busy and worked with my school schedule.

Rage: Have you run into any issues with hosting gay and lesbian events? Ahmed: Even though hosting events was not something I saw myself getting into, I

am glad I did because I have had the chance to meet and work with some of the most talented people in the industry. I have not had any major problems hosting events; however, I do wish more promoters were willing to work together.

Rage: What kind of following do you have across Southern California? Ahmed: I have a strong following that started out in Orange County and has now

moved on to Los Angeles as well. I keep them posted regularly through my Facebook and MySpace accounts.

Rage: Where are some of the places you have spun? Ahmed: I have DJ’ed at clubs such as PopStarz in Los Angeles, Frequency and Spirit

in Orange County, Executive Suites in Long Beach, RICH’s San Diego as well as Micky’s, Fubar and MJ’s in LA.

Rage: What are some of the major events we can find you at in August? Ahmed: August is a busy month for me! I am headlining for OC Pride on the 14th

from 7:00 -10:00 p.m. I will be at Dirty Pop at Tia Juanas Restaurant in Irvine on August 1st along with DJ Ray Rhodes and Mike Orion. Also catch me at Frequency’s SUMMER MASSIVE & One Year Anniversary Party at The Shark Club in Costa Mesa on August 18. Also, PopStarz at The Factory every Friday, along with my regular spots such as Micky’s.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA’S SPINNING STAR Working his turntables from Los Angeles to

DJ AHMED

San Diego, DJ Ahmed is quickly gaining attention for his many talents from DJ’ing to event promotions throughout Southern California. This month fans can catch him spinning at OC Pride on August 14th.

Rage: What is your favorite thing to do on your days away from the turntables? Ahmed: On days away from my events I am usually catching up with friends, travel- ing, laying in bed for hours or playing my XBOX (don’t tease me).

Rage: If you were a cocktail, what would you be? Ahmed: I would consider myself Vodka & Tonic, classic, simple, crisp, clean, smooth

and flavorful.

You can see DJ Ahmed weekly at the following venues: Tuesdays - Micky’s in WeHo Thursday - Frequency on a Boat (OC, Newport Beach) Friday - PopStarz @ Factory WeHo Sunday - RICH’s in San Diego For more information on Ahmed visit: http://bit.ly/djahmed www.atmospherepresents.com
