Te board also received a dozen writ- ten letters and over 70 e-mails, also op- posing the plant. Critics have pointed out the plant’s
proximity to schools as well as the residential nature of the neighborhood make the site unfit for industrial use. Plant officials have refuted allega-
tions about environmental violations at plants owned by plant president Mark Turner in Tennessee and Georgia. Te group has filed a libel suit against the NBACC and Pohl-Zartesky. At the May 26 public hearing, Gantt

said Blue Ridge Concrete had sued the county on two occasions after its request to build was denied by a Bun- combe County zoning board in 2008. Te denial was later overturned by
an appeals court because the county’s zoning plan had several clerical errors. A judge eventually ordered the county to grant building permits to Blue Ridge Concrete last fall.

glands, which exist in pairs and pro- duce different types of saliva. Hun- dreds of minor salivary glands are scattered throughout the mouth. Combined, they’re responsible for
producing about a liter and a half of saliva daily. Over the course of a lifetime, the glands will manufac- ture roughly 10,000 gallons of saliva – more than enough spit to fill an averaged sized backyard swimming pool. Saliva plays several critical roles
in the human body. It enhances the ability to taste food and speak nor- mally, and it facilitates swallowing. Enzymes in saliva aid digestion

and limit the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth that can cause dental cavities and gum disease. Plasma cells in saliva produce a sub- stance called immunoglobulin A, an important disease-fighting compo- nent of the immune system. Normally, the salivary glands pro-
duce just enough saliva to keep the mucous membranes of the mouth moist and comfortable. But when the glands malfunction, the result- ing lack of saliva can lead to a variety of distressing signs and symptoms. Dry mouth is commonly accom-

lingering sore throat and hoarseness. Inadequate saliva production can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Although dry mouth is more com-
mon among the elderly, aging alone is not a major risk factor for the condi- tion. Older adults are, however, more likely to have health conditions or to take medications that are known to contribute to dry mouth. Hundreds of prescription drugs
and over-the-counter medications can interfere with the normal secretion of saliva. Medications containing the word “anti” in their names are often responsible, including antihistamines, antidepressants and anticonvulsants. Drugs used to treat muscle spasms,
high blood pressure and urinary in- continence may be to blame. If you’re suffering from xerosto-
mia, it’s a good idea to review all of your medications with your doctor or pharmacist. Dry mouth can be a consequence of
an illness, including diabetes, Parkin- son’s disease or cancer. Mood disor- ders, such as anxiety and depression, may also contribute to the problem. Autoimmune disorders can nega-
tively affect the salivary glands and lead to dry mouth. One such disorder is Sjogren’s syndrome, a disease that can cause destruction of the salivary glands. Dry mouth may be the result of
a traumatic injury to nerves in the head or neck. Treatments for can- cer, including surgery, radiation and chemotherapy drugs, can harm the salivary glands, leading to a dramatic reduction in saliva production. For more information or tips to
