Small-town celebration for Independence Day

By Matt Tate It’s back but in an abbreviated

form. Te Town of Weaverville will

again celebrate Independence Day with the “Small Town Indepen- dence Day Celebration” from 1 pm to 5 pm on July 3 in downtown Weaverville with local groups sell- ing crafts and baked goods. Te event brings back an Inde-

pendence Day event to Weaverville after a year’s absence. Te Weaver- ville Town Council voted to cancel last year’s Fourth of July celebration because of budget concerns. Te cost of the celebrations, complete

Ridge residents currently get their water through a series of pump sta- tions because of some of the devel- opment’s steep terrain, although the reliability has decreased the past two years. Woodfin water crews have worked

on the stations’ communication de- vices, as well as an air compressor and pump, several times in the recent years, Martin said. Te one-million gallon Versant

tank would eliminate the need for many of the stations and provide the necessary pressure for a new fire hy- drant in the development. “[Versant] has been the subject of

many conversations at Sunny Ridge,” Murphy said. Once Versant went under in 2008,

the Town of Woodfin tapped a $3.95 million letter of credit, paying back the contractors, some of whom were working on the $300,000 tank. Tere was also a land deed issue with the property the tank was built on, which complicated matters even further. Now that the legal fray is settled,

Martin said he is “fairly confident” of the tank’s completion by year’s end. In other water news, the Woodfin

Water Board accepted the 2010-2011 budget of $1,542,100. In-district customers will see no rate increases. Out-of-district customers will see a 30-cent per-thousand rate increase. Te board also extended Martin’s

contract through July 2012. Next month, the board will hear from en- gineers about a proposal of $848,000 to replace deteriorating water lines on Riverside Drive. Nearly a third of the costs stems from extensive repaving that would need to be included.

with live music and fireworks, had grown to roughly $30,000 in the recent years. Tere were also concerns about

the number of guests at the events and whether the town could ad- equately handle the large influx of people on July 4. After being held for years in downtown Weaverville, the event moved to Lake Louise in 2008 with hopes of properly ac- commodating more people, to the chagrin of several downtown busi- ness owners. Te cancellation of last year’s

event also drew numerous com- plaints from others as well, partic- ularly from local civic and church groups who used the Fourth of July event as a primary fundraiser. Te North Buncombe Kiwanis

Club has moved its annual 5-K race, a fundraiser which had been held in downtown Weaverville for 15 years, to North Buncombe High School the past two years. Mayor Al Root and Vice Mayor

Dottie Sherrill urged a small-scale celebration this year to attract townspeople to Main Street and

help some of the groups with their fundraisers. Weaverville Town Manager Mike

Morgan said in addition to groups selling crafts and goods, there will also be several acoustic musical acts. Main Street between Church Street and Merrimon Avenue will be closed from noon to 6 pm on July 3 for the downtown party. Other July 3 events this year in-

clude the annual celebrations in Beech and Barnardsville. Te Bar- nardsville event will be the only North Buncombe celebration with fireworks. Te organizers of the proposed

Multi-Purpose Athletic Complex for the North Buncombe area will again hold an all-day music and entertainment event beginning at noon July 4 at North Buncombe High School. In addition to a long list of musicians, including Yo Mamma’s Big Fat Booty Band, there will also be a Taste of PUSH Asheville Fashion Runway Show, a kids’ hill climb sponsored by Foot Rx and a Tim Arem’s “T-bone’s Kids.”
