North Buncombe Firecracker 5K looks for help

By Matt Tate An annual venture to help North

Buncombe students is in need of a little help itself this year. Sponsors, donations and volun-

teers as well as participants for the North Buncombe Kiwanis Club 17th Annual Firecracker 5K Run are running light this year. Orga- nizers are hoping for a final push from the community. “We haven’t had less people con-

Volunteers needed

Te volunteers would be needed from 8 am to 11 am on July 3 and would be helping in areas like manning water stations, traffic control, etc. Anyone in- terested can contact the Kiwanis Club by emailing us at Kiwanis- firecracker@yahoo.com or call- ing 645-8670

tribute this year but the amount that is being contributed is less,” Kiwanis Club member Bill Bough- ton said. Te race, which will be held July

3 beginning at North Buncombe High School, is an annual fund- raiser for scholarships for North Buncombe students. Boughton believes the need for

a college education is greater than ever in the current climate. “We don’t have many jobs around

here that are the kind of jobs that can support a family on just a high school education,” he said. Te race will begin and end in

the parking lot of the school. Te course is a rolling path on paved roads in and around NBHS. Tis is the second straight year

the club has hosted the race at the school after 15 years in downtown Weaverville. Boughton said the school has been a good fit for the race. Register online at active.com

or mail a registration form with a check, payable to Kiwanis Club of North Buncombe, to Kiwanis Club of North Buncombe, P.O. Box 2207, Weaverville, NC 28787. Entry fee is $20 before June 20 and $25 after June 20. Online and mail- in registration ends 48 hours before the race. After this time, walk-up runners on race day will be ac- cepted. Te fun walk will not be a part of

the race this year. For more information, email ki- wanisfirecracker@yahoo.com.
