about “a painter’s obsession and how his presence changes other peoples’ lives.” And, she says, it’s about “love, first love and the last love of a lifetime.” Lastly, the author says that the novel
is “about our own psychology, the way we can come to love something so much that we’ll do almost anything for it.” Te story begins with modern art-
ist Robert Oliver who goes toward a painting in a museum with a knife and ends up in Goldengrove, a mental health facility, where he is treated by psychiatrist Andrew Marlow who is himself a painter also. Oliver refuses to speak or explain his
actions, but he does possess a packet of letters that leads Marlow to a group of Impressionist painters in the nine- teenth century and an obsession that parallels Robert Oliver’s obsession with the painting in the museum. Te meld- ing of these two obsessions is causal to solving the mystery. Te novel is complex, with multiple
narrators in parallel universes, but this complexity is rewarding because of its own impressionist sensuality and its timeless depiction of the artist’s world.
