Tribune asks for more info on ABC store finances

By Clint Parker Amid questions about liquor

sales on their profit and loss state- ment that does not equal their total sales reported on the North Caro- lina ABC Commission’s website, the Tribune has formally requested more information from the Weav- erville ABC Board. Last week the Tribune reported

the Weaverville ABC profit and loss statement showed a difference of over $15,000, including sales tax, from the totals reported on the N.C. Commission’s Web site. Te ABC Board sent another profit and loss statement that states

a net profit of $33,879.28 rather than the $35,098.03 reported on the initial profit and loss statement obtained last week. Even taking into account the new numbers, the total sales still differ by roughly $14,200. Also, the Tribune had a former

banker take a look at the profit and loss statement and was told that a more detailed report was needed to be able to dissect the financial health of the system. Specifically, the banking expert said that a bal- ance sheet was needed. A request for a balance sheet

along with an explanation of the extra $14,200 was put into letter form and sent to the ABC Board on

Monday (May 3). Board member Jacob Lions, during the Tribune’s initial request for the first report on the system’s finances, asked all future requests to be submitted in a letter and mailed. Te requirement of a mailed

letter asking for information is unusual for the Tribune. Most informational requests from the newspaper to government agencies are usually verbal or emailed. Te Tribune requested in the letter that the board respond with informa- tion within seven days of receiving the letter.
