World Quest finishes third in national event

A wealth of knowledge is at the fingertips of, from left to right, Kelsey Keller, Dylan Peifer, Tyler Jacon and Jose Maldonado.

By Matt Tate Teir study notebooks were the

length of a Leo Tolstoy and Ayn Rand novel put together. Te North Buncombe World Quest

team poured through thousands of pages of research, soaking up every tidbit and nugget they could. Obviously, retention is not a prob-

lem for this foursome as they finished a remarkable third in the nation dur- ing the annual bowl quiz competition held in Washington, D.C., that tests the students’ awareness of global topi- cal issues. Advisor and North Buncombe

High School teacher Eric Lapp was amazed by his students’ preparation and performance. “Te dedication and time they put

in was nothing like anything I had ever seen,” Lapp said. Seniors Kelsey Keller, Dylan Peifer

and Jose Maldonado and sophomore Tyler Jacon formed the braintrust of the team. Te WNC World Affairs Council

hosts the competition locally. Tere are 40 branches across the nation, each sponsoring a regional winner to the national competition. Tis is the BlackHawks’ second

straight regional victory. Te team placed 18th last year. Te World Affairs Council picks 10

categories per year that tackle global, political and human awareness issues. Tis year’s topics were “Current Event,”

“Food,” “World Cup,” “Music,” “Ca- ribbean,” “Migration,” “Genocide,” “Global Epidemics,” “Great Deci- sions,” and “Oman,” a Middle East nation that was a sponsoring country. Te team worked in a group and

had one minute per question to an- swer. North Buncombe answered 82 of 97 questions correctly, losing by two to a magnet school from Louisville, Ky.

Some of the sample questions in-

cluded, “When did the U.S. and Oman sign a friendship treaty?” (an- swer: 1833) or “What city in Canada had the most immigrants?” (Answer: Toronto). While in the nation’s capital, the

group saw some of the sights, includ- ing the Holocaust Museum. “It was a real exciting time,” Lapp

said. Happy Spring 2010! We have the cure for your cabin fever!
