Veterans to bridge youth gap in King’s first season
By Matt Tate When a new coach steps in, there
are two elements vital to inaugural season success. First, the players must buy-in to the new philoso- phies and there needs to be leader- ship in place to steady the ship. At North Buncombe, Wesley
King believes he has both of these bases covered, so to speak. Te varsity baseball coach is
pleased with the efforts of his youthful team thus far. Despite snow altering practice
and game schedules, the Black- Hawks are 1-1 as of Wednesday (March 10) as well as a 2-0 scrim- mage sweep of Hickory and Patton. Patton was the 2-A Western Re- gional champion in 2009. “Tese kids are very open-mind-
ed as far as what we are teaching them,” King said. “You want to have people who buy into it. And then we’ll rely on guys like Cody [Geyer] and Dean [Hollar], Zack [Moseley] to help bridge the gap be- tween the older and younger kids.” King comes to the BlackHawks from West Henderson. Te veteran trio, along with se- niors Trent Ledbetter and Dillon

Lackey, is expected to lead last year’s 3-A Western Regional semi- finalist that is looking to replace 11 of its 13 top players. Geyer, a third-baseman and
pitcher who is signed to play col- legiate baseball at the University of Memphis, said the BlackHawks are learning more about what they can become every day. “It’s tough losing the amount
of players we did [from last year’s team],” he said. “But we’ve got a bunch of players this year.” Offensively, one of the team’s
goals is for players such as Hollar, Moseley and sophomore Colby Fox to generate enough respect at the plate so Geyer will see some decent pitches from opposing pitchers. Te 2009 All-WNC Player of
the Year is 10 home runs from the NCHSAA state career record of 44. His prowess extends to the mound as well, where he routinely un- leashes his fastball that reportedly touches the low 90s. Not only are his fearsome swing
and stout arm attracting attention from the opposition, but profes- sional scouts as well who will likely be in attendance at NBHS games this year. Right now, the focus is on the
team, and King believes as the team comes together, a run in the play-

offs is not out of the question. “If we play a solid game this year,
we can put ourselves in the mix in the end,” he said.
CPR training Te Western North Carolina Region of the American Red Cross will be
offering free CPR classes from 9 am to noon on Saturday (March 13) at Weaverville Fire Department. Pre-register by calling 258-3888. “For one day each year, our community chapters offer these valuable life-
saving skills for free to area residents,” said Patrick Fitzsimmons, regional Red Cross executive. “Whether required for a particular job or as a skill someone wants to learn, the fact is that CPR saves lives.” Last year, more 450 individuals in Western North Carolina received free training on CPR during this annual event.
