13-year-old after he killed two turkeys with one shot on the opening day of turkey season Saturday (April 10) in Madison County. Ballard said his son nabbed two 20-

plus pound turkeys, one with a triple beard and one with a double beard. As they scattered, Ballard himself nabbed a 20-pound bird of his own. And on top of that, it was the first

turkey hunt for the father and son to- gether. “Tat’s pretty cool. Tat makes for

some good memories,” he said. Ballard said they were using a hand-

made box call out of wormy chestnut and two decoys to lure their turkeys. Several appeared on the horizon.

But when they came in range, Bal- lard said a pack of eight gobblers were together. “I’ve talked to turkey hunters and

they said that is just about unheard of,” he said, referencing the numbers of turkeys together. Ballard said he told his son to aim

for the base of the neck. Hunter took aim at one near the back of the pack and with one shot, two crumpled to the ground as the rest scattered. Ballard took aim and nabbed his during the scramble.
