NBHS Track team setting high marks
By Matt Tate North Buncombe High School
track coach Dean Duncan credits a culture shift in the program at the school for the team’s resurgence. Te athlete-centered training mod-
el in place develops training methods geared to the athletes rather than mak- ing the athletes fit a particular style. So far, the results speak for them-
selves. Te girls’ team is ranked third in
the state in Class 3-A and the boys’ team is making strides as well. “It’s not just about grabbing some-
one out of the hallway and seeing what happens,” Duncan said. “It’s all about work.” Duncan said the girls’ team has
been particularly responsive to the program. Te team has already set five school records and many have quali- fied for regionals. “Tis is their plan. Tis is their
show. Te motivation is intrinsic,” Duncan added. Senior Justine Stocks has set the
school record in the 800-meter and is leading the state as well. Teammate Sydney Revis leads the state and owns the school mark in the shotput. Te 4x400-meter relay team also
leads the state. Other strong partici- pants in the state individual rankings include Sage Proffitt (third in pole vault), Jordan Hensley (fifth in shot- put), Audrey Garrett (fourth in the 3,200-meter) and the 4x800-meter relay team is fifth. Another aspect of the team’s suc-
cess, Duncan said, has been keeping a majority of the girls participating throughout the season with cross country in the fall and indoor track in the winter. Last fall’s cross country team won regionals.

Happy ever after. Jordan Hensley participates in the discus as well. Te boys’ team is also making
strides. Sophomore Eli Clevenger has qualified for regionals in the 3,200-meter. Ben Shelton is repre- senting well in the hurdles and Greg Capps and Donovan Tally have solid 400-meter times as well. Duncan said even with the pro-
gram’s successes this year, more com- munity support is needed. He has about half of the amount of partici- pants he needs.
“If we’re doing this with the amount
of kids we have, imagine what we would do with 50,” he said. Outside of disciplinary actions,
members of the track team at NBHS are not cut, Duncan stressed. He hopes the inviting experience will help build a brand throughout the north- ern portion of the county. “Tis is a good thing for the com-
munity,” Duncan said of the track and cross country programs. A BBQ meal will be sold during the
teams’ next home meet with proceeds going to the team. Te state championships, the ul-
timate goal for the girls’ team, takes place May 21 at NC A&T.
