EGG-SELLER PUNISHED An auctioneer in Alnwick was fi ned £1,000 for attempting to sell a collection of 54 birds’ eggs valued at £40. The eggs had been spotted in the saleroom by the RSPB, who had informed the Northumberland police. The auctioneer, Jim Railton, was arrested, questioned and made to give a DNA sample before being prosecuted under the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act, despite the fact that the collection was over 100 years old.

FLOWER POWER Bonham’s Design from 1860 sale showed the enduring appeal of vases, with items by Lalique, pre-war Moorcroft, De Morgan and Fairyland lustre all performing well. Indeed a Lalique ‘Montmorency’, an opalescent glass vase from 1930, sold for £3,360 (£2,800 hammer), while a frosted glass ‘Formose’, by the same designer, sold for £1,440 (£1,200 hammer).

Magic carpet

A rare mid-17th century Kerman Vase carpet was auctioned at Christie’s in London on 15th April. Despite a relatively modest estimate of £200,000-300,000, the carpet went on to fetch £6.2 million from an anonymous telephone bidder – smashing the previous world record set for a rug, a silk Isfahan that went for £2.3 million in 2008.
