TRAVEL ABROAD
This well travelled line has survived threats
of closure and is likened to a fjord pony in Jos B Thue’s book on the Flam Railway. It climbs up the screes and steep mountainsides, and like the fjord pony it gets its nourishment from its own valley, powered by the electricity generated at the Kjosfossen waterfall. A change of train at Myrdal and I was soon
heading back to Bergen. For the food gourmet, Bergen has a host of restaurants and hotels from which to choose. My fellow travellers and I were entertained to dinner at the Enjorningen, in the Bryggen, the city’s only fish restaurant where the food and the ambience both do credit to Bergen. My base for the visit was the centrally located
Augustin Hotel, with its Altona wine bar reput- edly the oldest wine bar in the country. Ideal for a stay in Bergen, the hotel provides
free tea and coffee in the hotel foyer with a special treat between 4p.m. and 7 p.m. – free waffles with cream and jam – the only stipu- lation is that you have to make them yourself. Well worth the effort! Bergen and the surrounding area is perfect
for a short holiday. In summer time it is ideal for shopping, walking, fishing, sailing, hiking, biking, climbing, rafting, kayaking, mountain- eering, or just relaxing in this wonderful old city.

‘On the train ride you can see rivers that cut through deep ravines, waterfalls, snow capped mountains and farms clinging dizzily to what seems like sheer slopes.’
