Edinburgh International Animated feature fi lm ‘The Illusionist’ is the opener

Alan B Hayman

The Montrose-born artist’s dedication to representing both creatures and landscapes is refl ected by the fact he learnt taxidermy in his youth, taught himself how to paint on the bird- rich mudfl ats round Montrose Bay and has spent time with the deer stalkers of Glen Lyon in order to study moorland wildlife too. This exhibition helps to illustrate why he is currently in such demand for private commissions – which have taken him on assignments around the world. 28 May-30 June, Resipole Studios, Acharacle, Argyll. Film Festival Back once more at its earlier time – no doubt so that it no longer has to share the limelight with the Capital’s other international arts fi estas in August – this tribute to motion pictures continues to promote the best in fi lm from around the globe. Opening with animated feature fi lm ‘The Illusionist’ by Sylvain Chomet, it then takes its audiences on a roller-coaster ride through offerings aplenty both from Scotland and further afi eld. 16-27 June, www.edfi lmfest.org.uk

BRITISH SILVER WEEK

‘All that glisters’, so they say, ‘is not gold’ and this is certainly the case for British silver week – an event launched to celebrate the UK’s best contemporary silversmiths. Including pieces from the cream of Britain’s designers, some of whom will be on hand to demonstrate their creative

techniques, there will be more silverware on display than in even the Pittodrie trophy cabinet and there’s bound to be shoppers and magpies alike fl ocking to the famous jewellers from miles around. 7-19 June, Hamilton & Inches, George Street, Edinburgh. Tel: 0131 225 4898, www. hamiltonandinches.com

OF A FEATHER Colin See-Paynton is undoubtedly one of the world’s most talented wood engravers, and those who get the chance to see this exhibition will be sure to marvel at the

precision and intricate detail of his work. As the title suggests, birds provide the central theme, but you don’t need to be a twitcher to appreciate his sleight of hand in this traditional and painstaking medium. 22 May – 11 July, Jardine Gallery, Perth.
