Where are we?

This seaside town is a former Royal burgh. It has a handsome 13th century cathedral and Bishop’s Palace which is now a well known hotel. Its golf course was named the 5th best outside the United States in 2005 by Golf Digest magazine. It is the last place in Scotland that a witch was burnt – her name was Janet Horne and she was condemned to death here in 1727. Today a witch’s stone commemorates her death. This town used to be connected to the main railway network – its railway station opened in June 1902 but closed in June 1960. In 2000 pop star Madonna had her son christened in the cathedral the day of her wedding to former husband Guy Ritchie in nearby Skibo Castle.
