BITTER TASTE I thought your readers might like to know what some Americans think of customer service in the Scottish tourist industry. My husband and I regularly travel to Scotland and have long dreamed of visiting Orkney. So last Autumn we booked and paid for a four-day tour with Brightwater Holidays, which was to be the centrepiece of a 14-day Scottish holiday to coincide with my husband’s 63rd birthday. We then booked Transatlantic fl ights, train

tickets and hotels, only to be notifi ed a month later – quite matter- of-factly and via email – that our tour had been cancelled due to low bookings. The only suitable alternative tour available cost twice as much as the one we had originally booked, but we still agreed as long as Brightwater arranged for us to get to London, where the new tour started. Given the huge disruption and extra cost they had already caused us, we felt this was the least they could do and were shocked that they turned us down fl at. After visiting your fair country so many times, this has left a very

bitter taste and left us wondering what has happened to customer service in the Scottish travel industry. Edgar Lisowski & Debbie Hecker, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT I am proud to inform readers that veterinary charity PDSA celebrates 14 years of service this month from our PetAid hospital in Hutchison Crossway in Edinburgh. Over that time we have helped hundreds of thousands of beloved pets overcome sickness and injury at a time when their owners were unable to afford vet bills. As we celebrate another birthday I want to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all our supporters, whose generosity keeps PDSA running from one year to the next. My colleagues at Edinburgh PetAid hospital see around 165 pets a day. We provide over 63,000 treatments every year for pets and the hospital costs around £795,000 a year to run, so it’s easy to see why we rely so much on generous local support. Stuart McMorrow, Senior Vetinary Surgeon, PDSA PetAid Hospital, Edinburgh
