MEMBERS’ BENEFIT

Wine offer for members

Irvine Robertson Wines is an independent Scottish wine company founded by Sandy Irvine Robertson, offering both trade and private clients the opportunity to access more than 350 wines from across the world. The majority are provided by vineyards who have given us exclusivity to sell our wines in Scotland, preferring to follow the non-retail route. Irvine Robertson’s majority shareholder is Nick Harvey-Miller and it is run by Charlie Shentall and his team. Our relationship with the SRPBA enables us to make regular offerings to members, both through LandBusiness, sponsorship of your events, including the AGM, and attendance at the Royal Highland Show, the Scottish Game Fair, the Border Union Show and the Moy Games. As well as accessing wines at trade prices, you will receive a further discount through these offers and every time you order we will make a contribution to the SRPBA. You can also order direct from our wine list and receive the same special deal. We are delighted to have this opportunity to work with you and would welcome any enquiry regarding wines for shoots, functions or for private stock. Throughout the year, we will write a column which I hope you will find of interest.

GATWICK – MAY 2010 The London International Wine fair was an interesting event, with thousands of wines from the world over, but the underlying theme seemed to be price. UK wine statistics state that the average price paid for a bottle of wine is £4.29 including VAT and most people have discovered a favourite at or around that price. UK Government duty is £1.69 per bottle regardless of the cost of the wine and VAT, at present, is 17.5 per cent. This means that

nearly 60 per cent of that £4.29 is taxation! And the wine in the bottle to grow and bottle is £1.You have to ship, store and sell it! It’s a remarkable figure when you focus on that £1.It means that if you buy a bottle of wine for £6.29, the wine in the bottle is around £3.50 – that is a 350 per cent increase in the value and quality of wine for just £2 more. If you attended the SRPBA

AGM at Perth Racecourse, you might already have tried the Rolling wines. I hope you liked them. You can purchase them direct, quoting the SRPBA for a discounted price of £7.75 inc VAT per bottle. There’s also a great Shiraz and a Shiraz Rose. Our minimum order is 12 bottles, and if you order three or more cases, delivery is free, otherwise for two cases or less it would be £6.99 per order.

Another new one for us is

Periquita from Jose Maria da Fonseca, Portugal. These are stunning for the price and offer a white £5.92 (perfumed green apples and pears), a red £5.92 (very soft, with dark berries, coffee and spice) and a beautiful rose £5.86 (soft red berry fruit, very refreshing). Charlie Shentall
