First meetings under new policy structure

The first round of meetings under the new policy group structure recently took place, and provided an excellent opportunity for members to consider some of the key issues currently facing members.

The Housing and Communities group meeting focused on “sustainable communities – the role of the landowner” along with affordable housing provision. The meeting was kindly hosted by the chair Andrew Bradford, who stated after the meeting: “This was the first meeting of any of the new Policy Groups and by holding it away from Musselburgh, it was evident that this was not simply a rebranding of the old PHI (Planning, Housing and Infrastructure) Group.

“I was very pleased with the quality of debate in the morning session.

In the afternoon, we received presentations on the progress of two members’ Rural Homes for Rent schemes and on an innovative partnership concept to deliver, without subsidy, affordable housing through shared ownership. This idea, presented by Neil Clapperton of Grampian Housing Association, raised considerable interest.

“If future meetings can be as productive and stimulating as this one, then my impression is that the new Policy Group concept is a winner.” The well-attended Land Use and Environment meeting on 5 May considered the Scottish Government’s Land Use Strategy. Attendees heard from Jo Ellis, a member of the Scottish Government team that is developing the Land Use Strategy, who outlined the

background, purpose and timetable for engagement before taking part in a lively discussion session. The first meeting of the Tourism and Enterprise group took place on 18 May and was chaired by Jamie Williamson from Alvie Estate. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss emerging tourism markets and actions required to ensure that SRPBA members are able to identify and realise potential tourism development opportunities. The group also confirmed its support for a continued programme of Rural Enterprise Demo Days, underlining the value of these very successful events.
