spiring change—a subject that typically elicits stories about those whose impact has reached a national scale. In every community, however, there are people and groups whose names may not be well known, but who work diligently behind the scenes to brighten their corner of the world. These “homegrown heroes,” young and old, should be applauded and recognized for what they do. We are fortunate to have met many of them in the course of our work, as we go around and talk to people in the Knoxville area. While there are too many for us to list here, we’d like to thank all the homegrown heroes who help make Knoxville a great place to live, and who inspire others to do the same. So who inspires you? Tell us about your homegrown hero by e-mailing us at

KnoxvilleNA@att.net. We may publish some readers’ responses in an upcoming issue of Natural Awakenings. Our aptly named “Inspiration” column, a regular feature, focuses on the peo-

ple who influence us in a positive way. Many of the people in the column men- tioned are known around the world for their good works, but personal inspiration doesn’t have to come from another city or continent. Your own role models and influences are just as likely to be closer to home: your parent or grandparent, your brother or sister—maybe even your child. Inspiration can come from the humblest of sources; during the Great Depression, for example, the spirits of a nation were buoyed by a courageous canine. (Read more for yourself, page 24.) Speaking of our four legged friends, check out this month’s “Natural Pet” col-

umn (page 25). Unfortunately, almost every dog owner has been on the receiving end of “doggy breath.” The question is, what causes it? More important, how can we prevent it or stop it? This article explains why some 80 percent of dogs (and almost as many cats) have halitosis, and some safe, natural ways to fix the prob- lem. (We brush our dog’s teeth with herbal supplements made from herbs that we grow ourselves, but which also can be found at any of our local organic herb and grocery stores.)

We hope you have a good March, and look forward to hearing from you! Bob & Melinda

Dear Bob and Melinda: I picked up a copy of the new directory today at Earth Fare and was so impressed-

-it’s filled with businesses and services right in my neck of the woods that I had no idea existed! I’m thrilled to have such a great resource! Congrats on such a fabulous issue! (I also completely agreed with the opinions about healthcare that you shared in the pub- lisher’s note in the front. Bingo!) And as I was happily thumbing through my issue, I saw that you’d given the Center

for Peace a listing! Complete with our logo in color! What an amazing display of generos- ity and support—I’m totally blown away by this! Thank you so much! The fact that you would help us in this way to continue to get the word out about who we are and what we offer touches us deeply and is very much appreciated. What a fabulous gift for both the Center and for those whom the listing will reach! You will be remembered in our prayers and sent many blessings! We are so grateful, as always, for all that you do for us! Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Natural Awakenings is printed on recycled newsprint with soy- based ink.

With deep appreciation, Katy Koontz for the Center for Peace
