Trump
appoints Menie Estate Golf Course Contractor
DONALD J. Trump has awarded the multi-million pound golf course construction contract at Menie Estate, Aberdeenshire, to SOL Golf Course Construction Ltd of County Cork, established in 1998 and now one of the leading golf course construction firms in the UK and Ireland.
Following an extensive tendering process, Donald J. Trump, president and chief executive of The Trump Organisation, stepped in to negotiate the final deal and select his preferred contractor and stated: “SOL’s experience of championship links courses is unequalled and their workmanship is second-to-none. They will do an outstanding job.”
SOL recently completed the golf course at Lough Erne Golf Club in Ireland and are currently creating a short games practice facility at Rory Mcllroy’s private residence in Belfast.
Unsung Heroes Honoured
At the recent Harrogate Show there were two more worthy recipients of Terrain Aeration’s Unsung Heroes Award
IN their seventh year, the awards recognise the outstanding commitment of an individual to their local club. There are two categories - Groundsman and Greenkeeper - and the respective winners were Keri Jarman, Deputy Head Groundsman at Moor Park, and Hugh Murray, Head Greenkeeper at Bridgwater College. For the first time in the award’s
history, the winner of the Groundsman category was nominated by a greenkeeper! Keri works at Moor Park Golf Course and looks after the club’s grounds and tennis courts. He was nominated by his Course Manager, Stuart Bertram, because Keri took only four days leave (although he was entitled to more) having tragically lost both parents to illness, in quick succession. Left with his disabled brother to care for, whilst continuing to work full time, Keri finally made the difficult decision to put him into a home, only to slip on the ice and break his leg. Despite being in plaster he hobbled in to work to check that all was well. In the Greenkeeper category, Hugh Murray was nominated by Will Bowden, Programme Manager Sports Turf at Bridgwater

College. Hugh has spent fifteen years, not only maintaining Cannington golf course to a high standard but also instructing hundreds of students who have come through the college. Steve Gingell of the STRI spoke on behalf of his fellow judges when he said that Hugh’s passion and enthusiasm for the job had made him a tireless ambassador
for the turf profession, while Keri’s unflagging commitment and dedication was unprecedented. “These two exceptional individuals are deserving winners,” he said. Keri and Hugh received a cheque of £200 each from sponsors Pitchcare and the English Golf Union, as well as a framed certificate and a further cheque from Terrain Aeration.
