I don’t believe it! The not so serious side of the industry

GOOD old Mick McCarthy, Wolves manager at the time of writing!

Following his side’s 0-0 draw at home to Liverpool, he waxed lyrical about his lone striker, Kevin Doyle claiming; “It was the best performance ever seen by a striker at Molineux”.

He went on to state that; “if there was a

better performance I would like to see the DVD, or tape, or Beta Max, or Cathay Pacific”. Err, lost me there Mick.

who’s to argue with them.

Anyway, as if to put the record straight, Jeff Stelling, and his fellow Soccer Saturday crew, showed vintage footage of three Wolves strikers who they considered better than young Kev, and

They included Steve Bull, Sky Sports Andy Gray and Pitchcare’s very own ‘King’ John Richards, all scoring superb goals - something Kevin Doyle failed to do!

We were impressed with JR’s goal - and even more impressed that the footage was in colour!

Dead cert qualifications do the get the bodies from!?

WORKMEN are to be trained to make a living out of giving the dead a dignified send-off.

East Durham College (EDC) started gravedigging classes after Peterlee Town Council decided its staff should gain formal qualifications in the skill.

Three of its workers, along with a self-employed tree surgeon, have now begun their studies.

EDC said it was

“overwhelmed” after the announcement that it would be running the classes, with thirty-five enquiries received from councils and companies registering their interest.

The initial group spent their first day in class covering health and safety issues before moving on to Eden Lane Cemetery in Peterlee for a practical session - where

Skills include ground preparations, pumping out water and using mechanical machinery to move earth.

The students will be assessed and presented with an NPTC certificate.

Dave Miller, ground manager with EDC, who has previously worked as a groundsman for an authority, said: “There is a lot more to gravedigging than simply digging a hole. It is very demanding work, carried out in all weathers, but it can be very rewarding - especially when you know you have done your little bit to ensure a burial goes smoothly at what is a very upsetting time for the relatives.”

Not sure that this course will make it on to the Pitchcare training schedule somehow!

Hedge your bets ...

A 6ft tall topiary bush in the shape of a golfer about to hit a ball has been dug up and stolen from a golf club in East Sussex.

It had been imported from Italy and had only been in place at the Sweetwoods Park Golf Club for six weeks.

The unique work of art was stolen overnight between 9 and 10 January.

Police believe several people would have been needed to dig up the bush, and lift it over the perimeter fence of the golf club.

Neil Crittenden, the head greenkeeper, said the topiary, which is worth about £1,000, had been planted into a container which was dug into the ground at the entrance to the club.

“All the members loved it and it was a nice piece. It’s sad to see it go,” he said, adding that a reward was on offer for its safe return.

Harrogate - weak knees!

THE good folk of North Yorkshire once again entertained the assembled greenkeepers, groundsmen and industry folk gathered in the town of Harrogate for a spot of tyre kicking, mass debating and socialising.

Some, it would seem, took the socialising just a tad too far though.

Snow jokes!

WHEN the team and coach of a professional rugby club turned up at their training ground to find it covered in snow, the coach asked the head groundsman if there was any way that the snow could be cleared so that they could train.

Explaining that it was simply not possible the coach then asked “Couldn’t you pump hot water through the irrigation system to help melt it?”

In a separate incident, at a public school somewhere in the home counties, the groundstaff had worked tirelessly to remove over ten inches of snow from paths and roads so that the children could move safely around the campus.

Once the staff had completed the back-breaking work, the Bursar then asked them to remove it from the site “because piles of snow look so unsightly!”

We won’t bore you with the tale about pink pyjamas and the wrong hotel room!

But we will tell you about the ‘Gingerbread’ who was instantly smitten with our Training Coordinator, Chris Johnson. So much so that he was still shouting “You are gorgeous” as he exited the pub sideways - at speed!
