Enterprise award granted
Bernhard and Company clinches coveted Queen’s Award
Managing Director Stephen Bernhard said “We all work hard with one goal in mind - customer satisfaction. Queen’s Awards are not easily achieved and so I would like to pay tribute to the sheer hard work and consistency demonstrated by Bernhard’s committed workforce. We can feel justifiably proud of our collective efforts. I should also like to thank our associates and customers around the world for their continuing loyalty and support.”
“In top sporting competitions the TV cameras, media, spectators and players are all focused on the condition of the turf. The team and I are delighted that our sharpening systems play such a vital role in producing the consistently high standards that are required in today’s challenging world of sport.”
Stephen Bernhard with the award
BERNHARD and Company, the UK mower blade sharpening specialist based in Rugby, proved to be a cut above the competition receiving The 2008 Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category. Notably it is the only company of its type in the golf and turf amenity sector ever to be awarded this prestigious honour in the 43-year history of this Royal scheme.
The Award success was based on the continuous innovation and development of their highly- regarded Express Dual and Anglemaster sharpening systems. Used by leading golf clubs and sports turf facilities worldwide, this equipment produces surgically sharp blades on lawnmowers, allowing sports providers to create first-class presentation standards.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown said “Queen’s Award winning companies are standard-bearers for the best of British business. They embody the spirit of enterprise and innovation that is so vital to the future of Britain’s economy. Whether large or small, every one of this year’s winning organisations has achieved outstanding success in its field. I congratulate them all on their diverse and remarkable achievements.”
The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise consist of a business Award with three separate categories - for International Trade, Innovation and Sustainable Development. They are recognised in the UK as the most prestigious accolade for business excellence and are respected as a mark of quality and success by the business community.
Soil Science - New training opportunities
Two days of seminars on soil chemistry and biology to maximise soil fertility
Soil biology drives soil chemistry, but practically all training and education completely ignores soil biology. Consequently, many turf managers and groundsmen have not had the opportunity to learn how to use the free energy, disease management and plant selection that nature provides. In fact, most courses teach you how to override natural growth processes with chemicals at considerable cost to profits and the environment.
The rapidly escalating price of fertilisers, the reduction in available pesticides and tightening of profit margins make it essential that all managers of fine turf and landscape know how to work with nature rather than trying to oppose it.
Dr Elaine Ingham, for more than twenty years professor and researcher of soil science at the University of Oregon and now founder and CEO of Soilfoodweb Inc., is holding two days of lectures at Laverstoke Park, Overton Hampshire on 4th and 5th August 2008. She will be supported by Graham Lancaster (Laboratory Manager, University of Southern Cross, Australia) who will talk on the best ways to combine soil chemistry and biology to maximise soil fertility.
Examples of some of the benefits of developing correct soil biology include savings in water of up to 30%, reducing or eliminating the amount of hollow coring needed, reductions in disease and nematode damage, reducing fertiliser use, converting thatch into plant food.
If you believe that these benefits will help you improve conditions
and save your company money this course is for you.
Greenkeepers, if you use mains water it can cost £600 to irrigate your fairways just once, while each hollow coring and topdressing operation costs at least £1,500, so you can
advise the boss that future savings will more than pay for the cost of the education programme.
The seminars take place on Monday 4th August and Tuesday 5th August at Laverstoke Park, Whitchurch, near Reading in Berkshire. Individual days cost £150 with both days discounted to £250.
