WIMBLEDON’S WEATHER
A
s this issue of the Pitchcare magazine is published smack bang in the middle of the Wimbledon Championships it’s impossible to know, even with the assistance of our very own Mystic Loz, what vagaries of weather Eddie Seaward and his team had to cope with this year. Hopefully, it will have been rain free but, judging by the following statistics, that is unlikely.
Interestingly, with all the talk of ‘global warming’ and ‘climate change’ these stats show that, in reality, the weather doesn’t appear to have changed that much.
• The 1976 Wimbledon Championship was the hottest on record with average temperatures reaching 25.4°C and with 266.8 hours of sunshine.
• 1997 saw the most rainfall (118.3mm).
• The average daily maximum temperature in the UK for June is 20°C.
• Play was suspended into the third week due to bad weather in 1919, 1922, 1925, 1927, 1930, 1963, 1972, 1973, 1982, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1996,
1997, 2000 and 2001.
• There have only ever been five years with no rain: 1931, 1976, 1977, 1993, 1995.
• 1985 saw a spectacular storm resulting in over an inch of rain falling in 20 minutes.
• 1991 was the wettest first week ever recorded - after four days only 52 of 240 matches were completed.
• In 2004, Wimbledon opened its doors on the middle Sunday for only the third time in its history after persistent rain prevented any play on the previous Saturday.
• Court One now has blowers at either end to dry out the court in case of rain.
• To keep the courts green they are watered with 80 litres per minute
• The Centre Court and No.1 Court are re-sown each year.
• Statistically, there is only one Wimbledon washout every four years:
on average, one day in every 50 is lost due to all-day rain.
• The hottest (unofficial) recorded temperature on Centre Court was 46°C in 1991 and, more recently in 2005, competitors played through on-court temperatures over 35°C. It is highly unusual however, that the ‘heat rule’ set at 30°C, whereby it is deemed too hot for play to continue, comes into effect.
• On average 325,000 bottles of water are drunk at Wimbledon every year.
